Dancers from Pro Arte Centre attended the New York City Dance Alliance Convention in Vancouver, Washington this past weekend. This has been an annual event over the last six years in which our community has been able to participate in the much larger dance world south of the border. With a number of well-known faculty from New York and across the USA, our dancers greatly benefit from the teaching and experience of working with individuals outside of the Lower Mainland.
Part of the event is a competition in which groups, solos and duos are provided the opportunity to be seen with and by their peers. This year, as in the past, we are pleased and proud to be able to report on the successes of our students!
Contemporary Group — Junior Overall High School, Outstanding Concept & Critics Choice Award including invitation to the National Finals in New York City
Lyrical Group – First Overall Lyrical and Outstanding Interpretation
Jazz Group — Fourth Overall Extended Line and Outstanding Energy
Lauren Middlemass – Solo First Overall Teen
Katrina McKinnon – Solo Fourth Overall Teen
Danielle Lee Hogervorst — Solo Seventh Overall Senior
Asia Sinnes & Danielle Lee Hogervorst – Duo Second Overall Senior
The past year had been an exciting and rewarding experience for those who have produced the many costumes needed for our choreographers and dancers. We have joined the many that have produced detailed and elaborate attire for famous productions through the expanse of centuries. Costume artists like Diane, Sylvia, Sonja, Mandy and others have used their talent and spent hours of work to create the correct costume for each “dance story”. What a privilege and unique way to encourage and support our future generation!
The designing, sewing and production of costumes are only one part of the task of costuming. The costumes have to be laundered after each production so that they can be used again. In addition to this, they have to be sorted by type, style and size and counted so that none are lost and then, finally, filed away. Added to this, there are hundreds of them. This part of costuming would be overwhelming for most of us. It is only with the organizational skills of Sonja and Jill and their team of volunteers that this can be done with such grace. Thank you to all of our costume team who have helped make it possible for Pro Arte dancers to experience special moments on stage.
This is the week to try something new! Pro Arte Centre is hosting Open House Week … and you’ll want to be a part of it. You can this week and find out that Pro Arte Centre is the place where you can celebrate dance within an environment that encourages and challenges you to be your very best!
This is also the week where you can audition for next year’s Stage Production. If you’re interested, come this Thursday, June 26th from 3.45 – 4.15pm and attend the Audition Class at Pro Arte Centre.
There are incidents in the passage of one’s life that are extraordinary. There have been many happy occasions in the course of my life and Pro Arte’s Special Tribute will be with those at the very top. Thank you for your kind words so well delivered by a very special Pro Arte dancer. Those words will be in my memory always. Thank you to the Patrons of Pro Arte for the thoughtful and lovely reception given in my honour. All of this special evening waas so tastefully done and I thank you. Pro Arte is a happy and positive community; I consider it a unique privilege to be a part of this vibrant fellowship.
At Gala 2014, Ms. Frances was given special tribute for her enormous and priceless contribution, never ending energy and spirit to the Pro Arte community. She has single-handedly been responsible for over half the costumes in Pro Arte’s vast stock. Ms. Frances is the first person to greet anyone when they enter the Studio with a huge smile and kind words and is always there to offer safe and wise advise, give comfort, a shoulder to cry on and a true nurturer to us all. We are so truly blessed and so grateful.
The recent Panel Discussion held at Pro Arte Centre was a resounding success. In addition to the opportunity to hear about the professional advancements in dance/science education adopted at Pro Arte Centre by a team of dance and medical professionals, the attendees were provided samples of the use of the “10 Power Foods” and how they might be incorporated into a holistic approach to dancers health. For more information about the material shared at the meeting, check out the Online Bulletin Board available to all Pro Arte Centre families
